If you have two pieces of filament that are of different sizes and you need to join them together, you want them to be strong once they are connected. The solution to this is the Albright knot. This knot is created by sliding the thinner of the two lines through the thicker one. The Albright knot when properly crafted will ensure that they stay firmly joined. The Albright knot may also be used to join braided line to filament. With some practice, anyone can create a strong Albright knot.

There are four simple steps to successfully creating an Albright knot they are:

1. Locate the end of each piece of line, select the heaviest piece and create a loop similar to the eye of a needle. This will create the basic loop needed to run the lighter line through. Make sure you are holding the heavier line in your left hand (if you are right handed) between your forefinger and thumb.

2. Slip the thin piece of filament through the loop you have just created. Hold that loop in place and carefully and neatly begin winding the thin line around the base of the loop in the heaviest filament. Wrap the line 8-10 times and when you are done what you should see is a design similar to a hangman’s noose.

3. To ensure that the Albright knot is strong, you must thread the smaller line back through the loop in exactly the direction that you originally threaded it. This step cannot be overlooked, as without it your Albright knot will not perform properly.

4. To further strengthen your Albright knot, wet the entire knot and tug on the two ends until they are tightly joined. This helps add the additional strength that you will need for successful fishing. Now you can trim the ends and your Albright knot is ready to be used on your favorite reel.

When you are wrapping your line, take your time. Make sure that it is wrapped as neatly as possible. Not only will a neat knot be much stronger, but if you are sloppy in the creation of your knot, you will find that it may hang up in your guides or make your reel perform poorly. This is almost always a mistake that is made by beginners. Consider it this way – the smoother the knot the more likely it is to glide through your reel and your guides – similar to the way a kink in your line will go through. A poorly constructed knot could hang up in the gears. Some anglers who are concerned about end frays will place a drop of super glue on the end of each line to prevent any fraying.

There is another effective method for creating an Albright knot once you are comfortable with the standard format. Consider winding the smaller line five times down the loop and then crisscrossing back up the same loop. This creates an even stronger Albright knot and one that some anglers find even more visually appealing than the standard Albright.
