The franchise came into existence in 1883, is one of the oldest teams in baseball leagues. The franchise played in New York City until 1958 and was originally called the Gothams. The franchise won its first National League pennant in 1888, they won the world championships in 1888 and 1889. In 1894 they won the World championship but they could not attain much glory for next ten years. John McGraw was appointed as the manager of the franchise in 1902 and two years later they achieved a team record by winning 106 games. Under McGraw, the Giants won ten National League pennants and three World Series championships. McGraw managed the team until 1932.
Bill Terry joined the team as player-manager in 1933. Terry again led the Giants to pennant victories in 1936 and 1937 but, unfortunately beaten in World Series before the new dominant power in major league baseball.
The Giants returned to the top in 1954, taking the World Series in a four-game upset with a team that featured center-fielder Willie Mays, one of the baseball’s greatest all-around talents. The new team owner moved the team to San Francisco in 1958.
In 1987 and 1989 the team won two Western division titles. The team was joined by two superstars, Barry Bonds and Dusty Baker in 1993. All thorough the 1990s the Giants competed annually for the National League West division title. The Giants were defeated in the World Series in 2003 but recorded a record of 100 victories for the seventh time in team history and third time in San Francisco.
