The beginnings of climbing as a sport is pretty recent and does not go back in time as much as some origins of other sports do. People climbed rocks and mountains not because they wanted to but because they had to, but people today enjoy climbing because they want to taste the thrill associated with it. There was some rock climbing down as a part of Alpine mountaineering but this was done most for rescue type operations. Climbing emerged as a sporting activity towards the latter part of 19th century and there were three particular areas of Europe from where it began. The first location was Elbe Sandstone Mountains in the South-eastern part of Germany which is near the Czech border. By 1903 there were nearly 500 climbers who were participating in regular climbing, and several climbing clubs were coming into existence.
It was during the same time, rock climbing was observed as a sport in England. Many early climbers became the cynosure of all eyes as they attempted to climb extremely steep cliffs alone. It is here that the practice of assigning difficulty ratings to various formations began. Climbers would meet up and share and discuss their climbing experiences, while the climbing clubs were slowly getting formed.
What turned the area into the third hotspot for European rock climbing was a 17 year old student from Munich Germany to do a solo climb in the Dolomite Mountains located in northern Italy. In the United States though rock and mountain climbing were views in similar light, it was not until the ’50s when it was treated as a distinct sport. The techniques which were originally created for mountain climbing are still in use.
In recent years, rock climbing has gone through a period of rapid evolution with new styles and improved equipment constantly being introduced. What was once a hobby, climbing is now turning in to a lifestyle for avid climbers rather than a sport. In the urban areas, the new addition to the trend is indoor climbing. Here many actual rock formations are duplicated in design with artificial rock faces. The safety equipment used in the indoor facilities allows you to have as much adventure of outdoor rock climbing but without any risk.
Though the evolution of safety gadgets and technical advancement are commendable, rock climbing would need a lot of physical strength and energy and can never be completely risk-free. Just to live his daily life, mankind in recent times has had his share of challenges to check his fortitude and might. Climbing was done as a necessity and not for fun or adventure. The growing fondness of rock climbing as an activity shows the way our society is changing its choices. Man would be happiest if he was confronted with a fresh challenge every day and this is the basic truth why this sport exists today.
